Mews House
2005
The narrow site in Croydon backs onto a busy railway line. To combat noise and vibration issues the house presents a blank, masonry facade to the railway. However, to introduce light and ventilation the spaces are arranged around an internal courtyard. As there are no back gardens accommodation is laid out as an 'upside down house' with three bedrooms on the ground floor and main living accommodation above. The living accommodation then accesses a substantial roof terrace giving high level views over the surrounding area. The main living space is vaulted increasing the sense of space and connection with the roof terrace as well as allowing clear storey day lighting. The new house makes a positive contribution to the surrounding area elegantly resolving potentially negative site constraints.
